Percussions of Light is the first ever timelapse video of lightning bugs in 4K. Photographed during a full lunar cycle in southeastern Pennsylvania, Percussions of Light consists of over 20,000 images taken during summer 2015. Watch in HD and with headphones for optimal viewing experience.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Every June, days turn to dusk and the lights come out. In the early summer of 2015 I set out to capture one of my favorite natural phenomenon; the dance of light flashing through the fields of my family farm. This year, as I began to photograph, I realized that these tiny biolumenencent bugs continued their dance deep into the night, far later than I would stay out watching as I grew up. Over the course of the next four weeks I stayed out, camped out, and took over 20,000 photographs in hour long sequences in the fields and forrest surrounding the farm. When it came time to create a video that represented this familiar summer phenomenon, I wanted to create something that packed in the energy of every bug, star, and blade of grass that moved during the project. As I created the image sequences and watched as hours of time compressed into seconds, the video began to take on its own rhythm. Each flicker of light built upon the last and created a natural percussion, matching the beat of the drums.
The creation of this film allowed me to see lightning bugs in a new light, one that was full of energy and volume rather than the tranquil flicker I was used to watching as I grew up. I hope it can do the same for you.
